What to eat during Songkran?


Songkran is the hottest time of the year in Thailand.

So what to eat during Songkran?

Try some traditional and refreshing dishes such as Khao Chae, Prawn Pad Thai, Pad Kee Mao Talay and Mango Sticky Rice. Also, don’t forget to quench your thirst with a delicious Thai Margarita!

Khao Chae

Khao Chae is a seasonal royal dish made up of cooked rice cooled in flower-scented water with various condiments. Some condiments include balls made from shrimp paste, stuffed shallots, stuffed sweet peppers, shredded sweetened beef or pork, stir-fried sweet pickled Chinese turnips with eggs, raw mango, fresh cucumber, fresh wild ginger, fresh chillies and fresh spring onions. Above all, this dish is meant to be consumed in the hot season as it’s very cooling and refreshing.

You can get it at the Gourmet Bar, Novotel Bangkok on Siam Square. Our Songkran special à la carte menu will feature Khao Chae available for both lunch and dinner in April 2020.

Mango Sticky Rice

Mango Sticky Rice is the infamous Thai dessert loved by all. Mangos are in season between March-May, so they are extra sweet and tasty. The mango is best paired with sticky rice cooked in coconut milk. This sweetens the rice and gives it an almost pudding-like texture and the sticky rice is usually served warm with cool slices of mango served alongside. The flavours blend effortlessly it’s not too heavy, which makes it the perfect dish to have in the heart of Bangkok.

Thai Margarita

Get this Thai spin on a traditional Mexican Margarita. Deliciously crisp and refreshing, it will surely give you that kick you want while partying in the hot sun.  At Novotel Bangkok on Siam Square, our speciality Thai Margarita consists of lime juice, brown sugar, and tequila. Sweet, sour and insanely yummy! You can get it at the Gourmet Bar located on the lobby level or at our Splash Poolside and Bar.

Pad Kee Mao Talay

Also known as Drunken Noodles, Pad Kee Mao Talay is the perfect fusion between Western and Thai flavours. Bored of eating rice noodles on your trip to Thailand? Don’t worry this dish will give you the satisfaction of comfort food with a Thai twist. Indulge in some spicy stir-fry pasta with seafood, oyster sauce, basil leaves and chilli. Prawn Pad Thai

Craving an authentic Thai street food dish? Look no further, the Prawn Pad Thai at the Gourmet Bar is one of our favourite comfort food during the hot summer month of April. This freshly stir-fried rice noodle dish is bursting with flavours, from sweet and tangy to salty and spicy! To make it different fresh River Prawns are added to make this dish even more delicious. Get a side of condiments from ground peanuts, chilli flakes and a lime wedge to cater to your taste buds.
