Songkran Necessities

For the best Songkran 2019 experience, what are the major Songkran necessities?

  1. A happy attitude. Go into the streets smiling and wish everyone a happy new year in Thai “Sawasdee Pee Mai!”
  2. Water guns, buckets, garden hose. Anything you can fill up with water!
  3. ‘Din Saw Pong’ a Thai white mud. Locals will use this as a paste and smear it on the faces of passersby’s. It is seen as a sign of protection from evil.
  4. Plastic Ziploc bags, preferably ones that go around your neck for phone and valuables so they don’t get wet.
  5. Money, to buy more water, water guns and food!
  6. BTS card, as it’s best to take public transport as the roads get very busy and wet. Also major roads can be closed due to the festivities.
  7. Respectable clothing. Try to keep your shoulders covered up and make sure your clothing doesn’t go see-through when wet. It may be hot but keep in mind this is also a religious festival. Also wear a swim suit underneath since you will be getting wet.
