Songkran 2020

What is Songkran?

Songkran is a celebration to mark the start of the Buddhist New Year. Songkran 2020 falls on the 13th – 15th April, the hottest period in Thailand! During this celebration, Thai locals have family reunions, pay visit to temples to pray and participate in the ritual of “Bathing the Buddha”. This is when Buddhists pour fragrant water over Buddha statues in hopes to cleanse their sins and bring prosperity for the incoming year.

Songkran signifies the end of the dry season. So what better way to say goodbye than throw giant water fights. Traditionally the act of pouring water on someone, usually family member, is to wash away their misfortunes and welcome the year with a new start. But now it has developed into a full on festivity where people come from all over the world to participate in this giant water fight.
